As Council’s Manager Resilient Environment, you will be in a key senior management role as part of one of Victoria’s largest and most diverse Planning directorates, providing an important role in the delivery of critical, high-quality services to the community. With a focus on building community resilience, this broad, diverse and impactful role leads teams with responsibility for a future focussed portfolio including resource and waste management, and all things climate change resilience including natural environment, biodiversity, bushlands, water and sustainability including energy transition and towards net zero emissions. The Manager will also develop and oversee relevant key external partnerships.
Reporting to the Director Planning and Sustainable Futures, overseeing four direct reports and an overall team of more than 50 staff, this key role will provide strong management support to the Director, Executive team, CEO and Councillors.
The Manager will:
- Lead the Resilient Environment Department with an objective of providing high quality services across the municipality, focusing on developing people and leadership, a positive organisation culture and continuous improvement.
- Establishment of strategic direction and the management of the implementation and delivery of customer focused services to the community
- Have strong financial management skills
- Promote a collaborative, innovative and high performing culture, supporting and driving efficiencies to deliver service excellence
- Lead and guide Council’s resource and waste management practices through a period of significant legal, regulatory and social change towards sustained contemporary best-practice
- Lead Council’s pursuit and maintenance of net zero emissions
- Embed resilience within the Yarra Ranges communities to future-proof the municipality and guard against future environmental impacts
- Ensure Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing are evident in our long-term environmental stewardship for future generations
- Act as the steward of Council’s natural environment responsibilities (including bushlands, biodiversity and water), embedding forward thinking environmental practices across the organisation, and advising and guiding service delivery teams
Candidates will bring appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant, related field, with substantial senior level experience in areas of relevance to this portfolio, highly developed analytical and conceptual skills and a demonstrated understanding of the principles of contemporary resource and waste management practices. Of critical importance will be the ability to contribute to the overall constructive culture of the organisation, with a genuine commitment to embedding the organisation’s values across the team and across Council.
The role calls for demonstrated experience, knowledge and expertise in relation to Environmental Stewardship and the delivery of environmental programs including biodiversity research, planning referrals, environmental policy and strategy, water management and Landcare support.
Candidates will be motivated to drive change and maintain a high standard of personal and professional integrity, with demonstrable commercial acumen and the ability to work successfully in a political environment positioning the incumbent well for success in this highly rewarding and impactful role.
